"SETTING THE STAGE"

It's the first thing that attendees see.  It's the centerpiece for room.

It's the background to entertainers and executive presentations.

. . . But for this show we're on a budget, so how do we cost effectively set the stage?

Every event or meeting planner has been challenged to find a set that is not only attractive, unique and sets the tone for their particular event, but needs it to be inexpensive. Sometimes it seems the only thing that stands between these planners and the stage design of their dreams is the budget, but there are some tricks that we're happy to share with you that will give you limitless possibilities.

Thankfully, some of our favorite stage sets have been created with the simplest of materials and pieces that already exist. It's amazing what plexiglass, corrugated plastic, truss, stretched fabric, and a little light can add to simple black drape. A trick that we've been able to incorporate in various shows is using frosted plexiglass panels that are backlit with color changing LED lights. Panels can be configured in an infinite number of ways to cover the largest and smallest stages. Another option is coraplastic, or corrugated plastic, and even less expensive and lighter material that creates similar effects. Simply building a frame around these panels and hanging them between truss or using tie line can create an absolutely stimulating backdrop for very little money. You can add to the experience by texturing or branding these panels using gobos and projection screens.

With a little effort, the right experience, and even the smallest budget, it just takes a little creativity and resourcefulness to give your attendees an event that they will forever remember.

WHAT’S NEW:
What has DAV been up to lately?  The summer has definitely been hot, and so have we!  From poker pros to Palms parties, and Bentley demos to history-making events, it’s been quite a busy month.

IACEP.  We opened our doors recently to the International Association of Corporate Entertainment Producers, the IACEP, for an educational cocktail reception.  Twenty-eight members of the organization spent the afternoon touring our facilities and learning about the latest in event technologies. The purpose of this event was to give these producers a hands-on experience, one that simply isn't possible in the show environment. Producers were given the opportunity to be a head audio technician and mix a multi-track record of a band; to be a video director and switch video animations, bend colors, shift speeds, and spontaneously change backgrounds; to be a lighting director and program a lighting console and even be their own voiceover talent and record VOG tracks. All are tasks that producers rarely have the chance to do live on show site.

Air Force Documentary.  DAV's media team is hard at work producing our second documentary in conjunction with Nellis Air Force Base. For the first time in more than 60 years, members of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes were allowed into the Kawich Range, located on the Nevada Test and Training Range near Tonopah.  The U.S. Air Force allowed 12 members of the tribes to gather pine nuts for a traditional harvest, and we documented the historical event for a special to be released later this year.

Hendon Propertis at The Palms.  DAV recently turned the Palms Hotel & Casino's pool area and Rain nightclub into an oasis of indulgence for the annual Hendon Properties gala. The Atlanta-based company had more than 4,000 attendees, with entertainer Jenny McCarthy emceeing the event and members of the bands Starship and .38 Special playing their hits. Working with the talented staff at Baskow and Associates, DAV provided creative and technical support and equipment for the event, including lighting the pool area for the multiple burlesque shows happening throughout the evening, providing IMAG and more than 15 plasma screens which carried live feeds from our 4 on-site cameras and a sponsor logo loop, created by DAV's media department. Click here or on the image on the left to see the behind-the-scenes highlights of this unique event.

Absolute Poker.com.  Our 1,300 square foot studio was once again turned into a haven for poker professionals, courtesy of Absolute Poker. Mark Seif and Lacey Jones headed up the group, shooting green screen interviews and a pro roundtable discussion for broadcast on Absolute Poker's website.

Bentley Motors.  One of the most unique shoots that we've had in recent memory was for Bentley Motors. More than 20 new Bentley owners were flown to Las Vegas to test drive these high-performance luxury automobiles, and a couple of our lucky staff members went along for the ride. Whether it was shooting while hanging out the window at 100 mph or having these vehicles do 360's for the camera, the highlight for our employees was actually getting behind the wheel for a once-in-a-lifetime driving experience.

New Staff Members.  Finally, we're pleased to announce the addition of two new members to our sales team. Abby Ernzen and Rob Erickson are recent University of Illinois graduates who had previously interned with DAV Productions and will support DAV's sales efforts and event production.

STAFF PICKS - BEN & RYAN'S FAVORITE VEGAS RESTAURANTS TO TAKE CLIENTS AND FRIENDS

Vegas use to the place to find $.99 buffets but as of late has become home to some of the best restaurants in the world.  Here are a few of the ones that we like to take clients and friends to.

1.  Rum Jungle (Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino) - Rum Jungle is the best of both worlds!  During the dinner hours, it's definitely THE Brazilian Steakhouse to be at.  To begin with, they have over 150 different types of Rum for you to taste.  All of these glass bottles are stacked in a two story display that eventually transform into a runway for the evening's dancers.  Every appetizer and entree is delicious and their signature selection, the "Fire Pit"  (a 10 course all you can eat meal carved and delivered tableside) is absolutely the best meal we've had in Vegas.

2.  Mon Ami Gabi (The Paris Hotel & Casino) - Sip fine French wine and savor crepes, quiches, steak frites and salad Nicoise, pommes dauphinoise, bouillabaisse, or fruits de mer on a street level patio while viewing the sights against a beautiful lake backdrop. No! This is not the bank of the Seine River in France but rather Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Resort, Las Vegas on the fabulous “Strip”.  Get there early and request seats on their patio and you'll be able to enjoy a great dinner and watch the Bellagio water show at the same time!

3.  N9NE Steakhouse (The Palms Hotel & Casino) - Coming from the Midwest, we love steak!  This is one of our favorite steakhouses in town.  Only the best steakhouses survive in Chicago, and N9NE has become a Windy City favorite. It certainly has the right pedigree -- owner Michael Morton is the son of the legendary Arnie Morton, founder of Morton's Steakhouses, and the brother of Hard Rock Cafe creator Peter Morton. Taking the best elements from both places, N9NE serves quality cuts of meat in a sassy setting of limestone, mirrored mosaics, dark walnut wood and leather furniture. Any steak that comes out of a kitchen owned by someone named Morton is going to be big, prime-aged and still sizzling when it reaches the table. Most diners stick to the red meat, but seafood lovers may opt for herb-roasted salmon with crabmeat bread pudding, accompanied by spicy cioppino broth. The champagne and caviar bar, with its fiber-optically lit drink rail, is a fun place to linger before or after the meal.  Our steaks are always cooked with flavor and prepared at our desired temperature.  In addition to the great food, you're always sure to see a celebrity dining in there!

4.  Top of the World (The Stratosphere Hotel & Casino) - Combine a spectacular view of the Las Vegas Strip, mountain vistas, and the entire valley through unobstructed glass walls and you'll have a truly unique dining experience. This restaurant features a two-tiered main dining room and a suspended, upper-level cocktail lounge.  "The Top" is a 360 eatery that revolves full circle every hour in a tower that reaches 1149 feet above ground, exceeding the heights of the Tokyo Tower, the Eiffel Tower, and the Seattle Space Needle.  The dining experience begins immediately when you exit the elevator.  It's hard to decide which we like more . . . the food or the view!

5.  Hugo's Cellar (Four Queens)  - New things are always novel -- they keep life interesting -- but it's the classics in our lives that provide a comforting foothold in a sea (or valley) of change.  Hugo's Cellar, the gourmet room at the Four Queens, is one of those footholds. As the fortunes of downtown have waxed and waned and waxed over the past couple of decades, Hugo's Cellar has maintained.  It's a quaint room, a few steps below ground level and decorated with exposed brick and soft lighting. It has some unique customs, such as giving a red rose to each female customer (with a vase of water on the table to hold it) and house salads that are individually prepared tableside.  What we like best about this restaurant is that you can have casual attire, get treated like a celebrity and get a great steak all at the same time!  In addition, the salad they prepare tableside will be one of the best salads you have in Vegas!

6.  Viaggio's (Henderson, NV) - Wine, dine & enjoy the view at Brett Rosselli’s Viaggio Italian Cuisine & Wine Shop. Specializing in Italian food and offering over 1,200 wines from all over the world, the extraordinary menu reflects a combination of old world favorites with a modern flare. This fine-dining restaurant features an elegant menu of fine Northern Italian cuisines, a dazzling atmosphere, and a spectacular one-of-a–kind view of the Las Vegas Strip. Try any of the extraordinary menu items of freshly made pastas, Hereford Prime steak and chops, as well as many seafood and chicken dishes, salads, appetizers, and desserts including their very own crab filled ravioli, lemon-pesto grilled chicken breast, phyllo wrapped shrimp, Caesar salad, and tiramisu. All this and more makes Viaggio the perfect place to relax or celebrate on any evening or occasion.  Rumor has it that the wait staff knows Ryan by name (this is somewhat true).  Equally as good and for those looking for more of a wine-bar scene, try the bar downstairs for tapas style food and a great selection of glasses.

7.  Nora's Cuisine (Henderson, NV) -  Though it's located in a nondescript shopping center, the the line out the door at this restaurant is a guaranteed attention-getter. The visitors are anxiously awaiting authentic Italian at low prices. Everything is served by a friendly family from an open kitchen that runs the length of the restaurant. The pasta consarde (with ground olives, sardines and fennel) or putanesca (redolent of strong capers and green olives) are considered some of the best in town.  Our favorite seat here is at the bar, where entertaining bar tenders and solo diners make for great people watching.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE TAPE BALL??
When visiting DAV Productions' headquarters in Las Vegas, many of our production friends are amazed at our Tape Ball.  For those not familiar with what a tape ball is, check out the photo to the left.  When equipment from shows returns to its home in Las Vegas, the tape used to mark the show name and client is removed and added to the tape ball.  If you've done a show with us, I'm sure there's a piece of gaff tape with your name on it somewhere in there!

Tape Ball Vitals
Birthday:  Not quite sure, but it was born sometime in late 2002
Weight:  46.2 lbs.
Circumference:  2' 2"
Approximate length of tape:  4,215 ft. (~3/4 of a mile)

This month the tape ball made it onsite for the McKesson Evening Gala.

McKesson is a national pharmaceutical distributor and our event team provided creative and technical support for their gala at the Venetian Hotel & Casino. McKesson was challenged as their attendee count grew larger than the space they were initially provided. To accommodate their needs, DAV in partnership with Act One Events provided a live simulcast of country music superstar Sara Evans' performance for 4,000 people, and Venetian Hall D was transformed from a barren industrial tradeshow space to an exciting arena with a video cube in the middle of the room and more than 100 moving light fixtures to paint the room with light. It was an amazing transformation and the attendees were thrilled.
