University of Illinois Communications Students Gain Real-World Media Production Knowledge in Las Vegas

DAV Productions’ Externship Program Offers Students Unique Experience

January 31, 2007 – Las Vegas – DAV Productions, a Las Vegas-based event solutions and audio, video and lighting production company, recently opened its doors to three University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Communications students for a week-long immersion into the advertising world in Southern Nevada.

The students selected to participate in the intense hands-on program are Kate Kostal, Chelsea Lowry and Greg Morrison. Those participants spent the week shadowing leaders and employees in the media production and advertising departments, and were involved in client interaction, learning how to prioritize tasks in an industry that requires multi-tasking and were given several hands-on projects to complete.

“There are few, if any, opportunities in one's career to spend such an extended amount of time with employers in these high positions, and I was amazed at how much I learned from simply observing or listening in on phone calls,” said participant Chelsea Lowry. “Consequently, we were exposed to how diverse the clients are, as well as their requests, and we were able to see how the different departments and positions on the DAV team interact to provide a final result,” she added.

Greg Morrison found working beside DAV’s Creative Director, Mike Hopper, to be the most beneficial. “Watching how Mike handles clients gave me a great perspective of daily life in the advertising industry,” he said, adding, “His ability to handle a million things at once shows me that I need to focus on multi-tasking to be successful.”

“The University of Illinois is very good at placing students in unique programs and giving them good opportunities,” said Kate Kostal. “The experience I had at DAV is the better than I ever could’ve imagined prior to that week, and I’ll be able to apply those skills that I observed from everyone in the company,” she added.

DAV Productions’ Creative Director, Mike Hopper, feels the externship participants got a good feel for daily life in the advertising world. “Spending an intense week in a working organization gives these students a chance to ask the right questions while observing day-to-day life. Whether they were interacting with clients or accomplishing tasks over the phone, I think all three of them had their eyes opened to new opportunities,” he said.
